 Chivas Top America 2-1

There was a huge line just before the gates opened tonight at Arrowhead.

CD Guadalajara (Chivas) topped archrivals Club America 2-1 Wednesday night in front of a raucous crowd of 26,119 in the Clasico Bud Light at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. America opened the scoring in the 53rd minute before two late strikes propelled Chivas to a dramatic 2-1 win. The game marked the 205th edition of the Clasico. America now leads the all-time series 74-68-63. The attendance marks the 6th highest total for soccer in Arrowhead Stadium history.

The score was tied 0-0 at halftime in a back-and-forth affair that featured 13 total shots. Club America then broke through in the 53rd minute through an excellent finish by striker Daniel Marquez. Ismael Rodriguez played a long ball out of the back that bounced over the Chivas defense into Marquez’s path. Marquez held off a defender and deflected the ball past Chivas goalkeeper Luis Ernesto Michel for a 1-0 lead.

Chivas leveled the score at 1-1 through a Club America own goal in the 73rd minute. After a dangerous cross into the area, Club America defender Fernando Lopez redirected the ball into his own net while trying to clear the danger.

Chivas then scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute to send their fans into a frenzy. A free kick on the edge of the penalty area by Sergio Avila was initially saved by substitute goalkeeper Leonin Pineda, but Omar Arellano was there to slide the rebound into the open net for a 2-1 lead that would hold up for the final four minutes and three minutes of stoppage time.

The Kansas City Wizards return to MLS play this Saturday with a match against FC Dallas at 7:30 p.m. CT at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
