Piojo Lopez Re-Signs Without DP Tag

Piojo at last year's unveiling in Buenos Aires.

As you may have seen at the KC Star, or at ESPN Soccernet, or at Soccer By Ives or at ESPN Deportes, Claudio Lopez has re-signed with MLS and Kansas City. Lopez became Kansas City's first-ever Designated Player last season, but has re-signed for a figure that does not require the DP tag for 2009. Per League and club policy, we don't release salary numbers. Official release will come out tomorrow, but this story is already making news, so I figured we'd aggregate it here.

Claudio scored six goals with seven assists last year in MLS play. He played in 28 games, starting 25. He added one more goal and two assists in U.S. Open Cup play. What do you think of Claudio coming back? Let us know below.

Great move FO. Now go get us a DP forward!

I think it's a smart move. I'm glad to see him back, and I think dropping the DP is great. Now, hopefully, we'll have another star player to cheer on!

This is a good move. I think Onalfo learned how to play Claudio last year- he needs some rest from time to time- using him in the right way will increase his effectiveness. Also, and more importantly, I hope this means KC will be going after a DP.

Fantastic news. I wonder what kind of behind-the-scenes dealing was going on to convince Piojo to resign at a lower salary? Maybe he just loves KC, and wants to spend a few years.

Anybody know how long the new contract is for? 1 year? 2?

This is a very impressive development. I'm glad Lopez has decided to stay, and I'm very impressed with his willingness not to be the DP for the upcoming year.

Count me in as another Wizards fan who is very happy Lopez will be with the team for another year. Let's hope the team now uses some of the extra money to sign up another attacking threat to pair with Claudio, whether in midfield or up top.

I was a not a big fan last year of him to say the least, but when he "came back" it was clear what he could do. I am glad we got him back. I don't think this means we will bring in a DP this year but that certainly would/hopefully will be icing on a new stadium cake.
